A little over a year ago, I had the words "Do It For Me" tattooed on my right forearm, alongside a small heart, as an undeniable reminder.
I am a caretaker.
I am a former people-pleaser, with the occasional slip back into questionable habits.
Old mentalities of...
gotta earn their affection,
gotta prove my worth,
...are difficult to get out from under.
I'm working on it.
I will always be a person who actively cares for others. I want people to feel loved, supported, and nurtured. Every once in a while, I have to check in with myself to see if I'm feeling loved, supported, and/or nurtured, too... if not by others, at least by my own caring and boundaries.
A gentle but firm reminder to those like me:
We have to love and care for ourselves first before we can genuinely give of ourselves to others. Make sure you're doing it for you in that you are best representing the person you strive to be, your favorite self, not because you're concerned you have something to earn or prove.
Love yourself well.
